What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a health professional who deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

 

Feet are prone to aches and pains and a variety of problems and conditions. These may include corns and calluses, tinea, bunions, papillomas (plantar warts) and ingrown toenails. Most foot problems are easy to avoid and simple to treat, however it is important to be correctly diagnosed and treated by a professional.

 

  • Sports medicine – diagnosis and treatment of sport injuries. Examining the lower limb and foot, diagnose foot conditions and recommend appropriate footwear, training regimes if needed, orthotic devices to fit a specific style of shoe. Common sport injuries are plantar fasciitis, achillies tendonoitis, stress fractures, ankle sprains, shin and knee pain.

 

  • Peadiatrics – care for children’s feet. Providing treatment and advice on how to manage and prevent foot conditions which often evolves into adult life and involves education on footwear, advice on exercises and/or orthotic control of the feet. 

 

  • Biomechanics –  in treating chronic foot pain and evaluating specific needs of the patient  a podiatrist will perform a clinical biomechanical assessement to determine the cause of the problem and recognize any abnormality in alignment and motion.

 

  • Surgery – Podiatrist are qualified in both nail and cutaneous surgery but some have undertake further study to perfom additional foot surgery.

 

  • Diabetes – monitor and manage vascular and neurological conditions associated with diabetes.

 

  • Dermatology – diagnose and treat common and rare skin and nail pathologies of the feet.
